ABF Freight System, Inc. Announces the Release of Q-Rate® for Windows

Fort Smith, Arkansas, May 26, 1999 -- ABF Freight System, Inc. (Nasdaq: ABFS) has announced the release of Q-Rate® for Windows, its transportation pricing software for Windows® 95/98/NT operating systems.

Q-Rate for Windows incorporates all of the functionality of ABF's respected Q-Rate for DOS, as well as some exciting new options, all in the user-friendly Windows operating environment. ABF also plans continued support of Q-Rate for DOS.

Mr. Robert A. Davidson, ABF's Vice President - Marketing and Pricing, stated, "ABF was the first LTL carrier to offer a personal computer rating system. Over the years, many carriers have followed ABF's lead in offering a DOS-based rating program. ABF is pleased to be the first national LTL carrier to offer a Windows-based transportation pricing system. With its ease of use and intuitive graphical interface, Q-Rate for Windows clearly raises the standard in motor carrier rating software. Through personal computer and Internet innovations, ABF is committed to maintaining our leadership in transportation technology."

Both versions of Q-Rate allow ABF customers to determine the transportation cost for shipments moving between most points in North America. New features of Q-Rate for Windows include a complete zip/postal code look-up, multiple customer profiles and a toolbar of Internet links.

The zip/postal code look-up feature simplifies the traditional shipment rating process. When entering a city name, customers are presented with all corresponding zip/postal codes. Similarly, when entering a zip/postal code, customers are offered a selection of all corresponding city names. The zip/postal code look-up is applicable for points throughout North America, including Canada and Mexico.

Customers will also save time when using the multiple customer profiles within Q-Rate for Windows. With this feature, a single customer can set up numerous shipping profiles, each with unique pricing. For example, customers may store a different profile for each of their shipping locations and easily switch between profiles without restarting the program. Like the customer- specific rates from ABF's Internet site, the prices from Q-Rate exactly match those on invoices, allowing customers to verify rates and pre-plan shipping costs.

Q-Rate for Windows was also designed to be Internet friendly. A built-in toolbar allows customers easy access to the wide variety of on-line tools within eCenter located at ABF's award-winning Internet site (www.abfs.com). ABF provides Q-Rate for Windows free of charge on CD-ROM for all ABF customers. Q-Rate for Windows is also available directly from ABF's Internet site. Customers are encouraged to contact their local ABF service center, visit the ABF Internet site or to call 800-610-5544 for more information.
