ABF® CEO Named New MFCA Chairman

(Fort Smith, Ark., December 15, 2000) - David E. Stubblefield, President and CEO of ABF Freight System, Inc.®, has been named the new Chairman of the Motor Freight Carriers Association (MFCA). The MFCA Board of Directors announced their decision earlier this week in Washington, D.C.

"I am delighted with the Board's election of David," said MFCA President and CEO Tim Lynch. "He brings over 40 years of trucking experience, including the last six as President and CEO of ABF Freight System. More importantly, he has been directly involved in the formation and growth of the Motor Freight Carriers Association since its start in 1997."

In assuming his new duties as Chairman, Mr. Stubblefield said he was looking forward to the many challenges facing the freight transportation industry. "Working together with the Teamsters on programs like the 'No-Zone' initiative to make our highways safer, we can make a difference for our employees and the public," said Stubblefield. He added, "We also plan to work closely with shipper groups, seeking common ground on important legislation and public policy issues like the proposed hours of service changes. Solid communication among all interested parties is the key to creating lasting and positive solutions."

As MFCA Chairman, Mr. Stubblefield replaces Michael W. Wickham, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Roadway Express. Mr. Stubblefield joined Mr. Lynch in thanking Mike Wickham for his efforts over the past three years. "Anyone affected by the National Master Freight Agreement -- motor carriers, their employees, and their customers -- owes Mike a thank you. And though Mike is stepping down as Chairman, his continued participation on the Board of Directors will ensure that we can count on his experience and guidance."

MFCA is the national trade association representing the unionized general freight carriers. Formed in 1997, MFCA has as its mission to promote the economic interests of unionized motor freight carriers.

ABF Freight System, Inc. is one of the nation's largest and most experienced motor carriers, offering direct service to all 50 states, nine Canadian provinces, Guam and Puerto Rico. In addition to the carrier's broad service to Mexico, ABF provides guaranteed expedited service for time-critical and time-definite shipments via its TimeKeeper® service. The company's Web site, abf.com, is ranked among the best 50 of all sites by CIO magazine. ABF is the largest subsidiary of Arkansas Best Corporation (NASDAQ/NMS-ABFS).
