Transportation Secretary Mineta Discusses Best Practices in Safety and Security with ABF® Officials

(FORT SMITH, Arkansas, August 29, 2002) — U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta met with senior management of ABF Freight System Inc.® on Wednesday at ABF’s headquarters in Fort Smith. Secretary Mineta discussed the importance of transportation safety and security and acknowledged ABF’s long-standing leadership in those areas.

ABF®, one of North America’s largest motor carriers, has been consistently recognized for its best-in-class safety and security initiatives. Over the past two decades, ABF has received the American Trucking Associations’ prestigious President’s Trophy in virtually every year that it has been eligible. In each of the last 30 years, ABF’s safety ranking has been first, second or third within its trucking category. In 2001, the American Trucking Associations selected ABF as the top motor carrier both in claims/loss prevention and in security, the first such dual award of its kind.

“ABF is a proven transportation leader, winning numerous awards for safety, security and customer service,” stated Secretary Mineta. “They are a role model for our entire industry. Through this meeting, I expect to get a better understanding of the key elements of ABF’s success, particularly the training and procedural components that keep ABF at the top of the industry.”

ABF officers provided insight into new-driver screening and hiring procedures, as well as driver training and retention practices. Its annual driver turnover rate is less than 7 percent, typically from retirements.  ABF also described its three-year road-equipment replacement cycle, which fosters highway safety and reduces breakdowns. The average road tractor in ABF’s fleet is only 18 months old.

“We are honored to have Secretary Mineta as our guest and for the chance to have this open dialogue with him,” stated A.J. Phillips, ABF Vice President of Safety and Security. “It is clear that he shares ABF’s commitment to keeping our highways safe, our country secure and our economy moving forward.”

The group also discussed ABF’s history and its corporate culture. ABF officers described the strong work ethic of ABF’s people, their commitment to quality and the company’s steadfast integrity. In closing, Secretary Mineta stated, “Transportation is the engine that drives our economy. We all depend on it for the things we need every day. I am thankful and appreciative to be associated with strong companies like ABF.”
