ABF finds way to move more with fewer trucks
Shipping oversized or irregularly shaped freight can present special problems for manufacturers pursuing a competitive price advantage. Transportation costs can often represent a disproportionate amount of the products total price tag. For these manufacturers, reducing costs without sacrificing quality of service can be an elusive goal.
Pursuit of that goal recently brought a metal-goods fabricator to ABF seeking a customized solution. ABF set out to learn more about the shipping processes used by the fabricator. Likewise, the fabricator was invited to spend time at an ABF distribution center to see first-hand how ABF applies quality processes to freight handling.
This technique of cross-analysis yielded an improved method for bundling, handling, and loading shipments from the fabricator. Consequently, ABF now uses fewer trucks to ship more loads for the fabricator, giving them a very desirable competitive edge among their competitors.
