Manufacturer engages a 'proven transportation leader'

Shipment security is important to every manufacturer. After all, shortages due to mishandling or even theft can severely impact profitability. But when you’re shipping weapons, safe and secure transportation becomes paramount.

During these perilous times, even routine weapons shipments are subject to heightened protection and intense supervision. Imagine what would happen if a weapons shipment were abandoned or otherwise lost en route to its final destination. One shudders at the thought of the potential consequences.

That’s why visions of disaster gripped one weapons manufacturer when Consolidated Freightways went bankrupt before completing delivery of $2 million worth of weapons. Immediately, the manufacturer took decisive action to ensure security of the wayward cargo. First, it alerted law enforcement agencies of the potential breach of security. Then it engaged ABF Freight System to intercept the freight and ensure its safe transport and delivery. Mission accomplished.

“ABF is a proven transportation leader, winning numerous awards for safety, security, and customer service,” noted U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta. “They are a role model for our entire industry.”

ABF’s safety, security, and freight-handling performance have been consistently recognized as best in class. During the past decade, 99% of all shipments handled by ABF were moved without a loss or damage claim. As a result, the American Trucking Associations have awarded the President’s Trophy for safety to ABF for an unprecedented five times. In 2003, Brian Shutt, ABF security manager, became the first recipient of the ATA’s Security Professional of the Year award. ABF also was selected by the ATA as the top LTL motor carrier in claims/loss prevention in 2002. And in 2001, the ATA selected ABF as the top motor carrier in both claims/loss prevention and in security -- the first such dual award of its kind.
